The Speaker - Alex Broomfield, Director of Business Performance at B&Q
Alex Broomfield was recently promoted to Director of Business Performance at B&Q. With more than a decade of leadership experience, Alex has built a career defined by impact, transformation and a commitment to helping teams and the business thrive.
She started her journey at B&Q 10 years ago, when Managing Director of Venture Recruitment Partners, Richard Carter, recruited her on behalf of B&Q, as their Property Finance Manager. Alex played a key role in rationalising B&Q's estate, closing 65 stores and exploring opportunities for new formats and rightsizing in their retail spaces.
Before B&Q, Alex gained international experience in Australia with Coles, as well as at Sainsbury’s in the UK, developing her expertise in property finance through new store openings and the growth of concession businesses. She is a Chartered Accountant, having completed her CIMA qualification during her finance graduate programme at the Arcadia Group.
During her time at B&Q, Alex has held various senior finance roles, including Retail Finance, FP&A and, recently, Head of Commercial Finance. She also led the creation of B&Q's finance apprenticeship programme in 2018, an initiative that continues to support early talent in entering the workplace.
In January 2025, Alex returned to work after a period of maternity leave. Her daughter recently turned two, and balancing parenthood with a career in leadership has only strengthened her focus, empathy, and drive. Alex is known for her ability to build strong stakeholder relationships, her highly organised approach and exceptional knowledge of the retail sector.
With a high-energy leadership style, Alex thrives in a fast-paced and changing environment. She seeks to understand and support others, connecting with our previous speaker’s sentiment that people can reach their full potential and thrive when we empower them to do things their way and be their authentic selves. Alex is committed to supporting other people to love what they do and grow their careers.
The Topic - The Journey to Senior Leadership: Leveraging Support Systems and Self-Belief
Alex’s discussion will focus on the journey to senior leadership. Drawing from her own experience and recent promotion, Alex will explore:
How setting goals and believing in your own abilities can help you achieve your vision
How to utilise your network and the support of your employer on the journey to senior leadership
Being your own cheerleader
And how to support others around you as you progress in your career
