Get the Job - Why is now a good time to move jobs?

The start of a new year is often a popular time for a job change or a career move. This applies to both you as a candidate and employers looking to recruit.

So what is it that makes the start of a fresh year a good time to change jobs?

For the candidate, it can be the prospect of a new beginning. The start of a new year can be a natural time to reassess your career and make changes. It can be a time to set new goals and start fresh, including exploring new job opportunities. It can also be a convenient time to make the move.

For a business, it's often the time they increase their hiring activity. The end of the fiscal year is a natural time to make changes and bring on new employees, which means there are often new opportunities at this time of year.

So, if you've started this year thinking it's time to look for a new job, it's probably the perfect time to start.

Is now the best time to move jobs?

It can be daunting switching jobs, so finding the right time to take the leap is important. Looking for a new role when the job market is also in your favour will increase your chances of successfully finding a new role.

Reasons for wanting a new job or career change are personal, but there are some common reasons to leave a job and decide it's time to find a new one.

How do you know when it's time to move jobs?

You want to build better working relationships

You spend a third of your life at work, so the relationships you have at work are important. If your workplace doesn't provide a good environment or the workplace culture makes you feel unsupported and undervalued, it could mean this is the wrong company for you. How you're treated at work will greatly impact your attitude, motivation, and ability to grow.

If your current employer, managers, or peers are causing you to dread going to work in the morning, this isn't something you need to put up with. Find a company that values, supports, and encourages a good working environment.

You want to earn more money

Money isn't everything, but with the cost of living, rising interest rates, or simply your own goals in life, you may well find your current income is simply not good enough. There is no shame in considering a job switch for a salary increase. Don't be scared that a recession means a job search for more money isn't viable.

Many recruiters are happy to pay good money for new people and fresh talent. If you're not making enough money in your current job, start looking for roles that have a better offer. Sometimes a change in the sector you work in can make a big difference. It may be worth talking to a recruitment expert for recommendations and salary expectations.

You want to learn more

When you've been in a job for a while, you can get to the stage where you're coasting and not growing. The problem with this is it can lead to you feeling unmotivated and bored at work. Days become slow, and you risk getting stuck in your current position because you are not learning new skills.

If you're finding this is the case, it may be time to move on in the near future. Find a new role where you're challenged to learn more and grow. By developing your skills, you improve your odds of getting noticed by potential employers or finding new and better positions within your current company.

You want improved benefits

It's not all about the money. Employers can also retain and attract new talent by offering better benefits. As an employee, the benefits package that comes with your job offer may simply be the best reason to make the move.

A new employer may be able to offer you more holiday, health packages, increased pension contributions, and better sickness or maternity/paternity cover. These are important to you and your family and a genuinely good reason to start checking out those job vacancies.

Looking to change or grow your career this year?

If you've decided this could be time to move on, it's time to start looking for your next career move. LinkedIn is a great platform to use to look for opportunities and connect with potential employers.
