What to do if you are struggling to find the right finance or accountancy job for you

Searching for a worthwhile finance or accountancy job opportunity that meets your requirements can take considerable time and effort.

There can be a variety of reasons why it may be difficult to find a job, including:

  • Economic conditions:The job market has been through a huge amount of upheaval over the last two years thanks largely to the pandemic. Making it a candidate driven market, where more people want more flexibility these days, and traditional salaried and hourly positions just aren’t cutting it anymore.

  • Lack of experience: Many employers look for candidates with relevant experience in a particular field, and if you are just starting out or trying to switch careers, this can be a hurdle to overcome.

  • Lack of qualifications: Employers may require certain qualifications or certifications for certain jobs, and if you do not meet these requirements, it can be difficult to secure a job in that field.

  • Location: Depending on where you live, the job market may be more competitive, with fewer job opportunities available.

  • Skill gaps: In some cases, there may be a skills gap between the skills you have and the skills that employers are looking for, which can make it difficult to find a job.

  • Networking: Many jobs are filled through personal connections or referrals, and if you do not have a strong network of contacts in your industry, it can be harder to find job opportunities.

  • Competition: Depending on the field you are interested in, there may be a large pool of qualified candidates vying for the same jobs, making it harder to stand out and secure a job offer.

If you're struggling to connect with jobs that interest you, you can take steps to improve your position as a candidate and appeal to employers. Learning these steps can maximize the success you find in your job search.

  • Identify your strengths and passions: Start by taking a closer look at your interests, passions, and skills. Try to identify what you're good at and what you enjoy doing. Consider what you're passionate about and what kind of work you find meaningful. By doing so, you can find job opportunities that match your skills and interests and increase your chances of finding the right fit.

  • Network: Networking is an effective way to discover job opportunities that may not be advertised. Reach out to friends, colleagues, and professional contacts in your industry to see if they know of any job openings or can provide any recommendations. Attend industry events, job fairs, and career workshops to meet people who can help you find the right job.

  • Be open-minded and flexible: Sometimes, you may need to be flexible in terms of the type of job you're looking for or the location. Consider job opportunities that may not be your ideal position, but could offer valuable experience and skills that can lead to your ideal job in the future. Additionally, consider relocating to areas where your skills and interests are in high demand. Remember, finding the right job takes time, patience, and a willingness to explore different options.
